Gyeongbokgung Palace, the most visited place by foreign tourists, is located in the middle of downtown Seoul, making it a good place to know the history and culture of Korea. Palace are a space which we re protected by people over over 500 years in the Joseon era. Palaces is a story with a different history perspective, aturing the people and buildings of the Joseon Dynasty rather than focusing on the architectural characteristics of the palaces.
There are five ¡®Gung¡¯s from the Joseon Dynasty in Seoul - Gyeongbok Gung, Changdeok Gung, Changgyeong Gung, Gyeonghui Gung, Deoksu Gung. Gung is combination of a personal space where a king lives and a working space where he governs. There is usually one Gung per country. The history tells you why there are five Gungs in Joseon.
Joseon was founded by Lee Seonggye (Taejo) in 1392. He wanted to start a new country from a new place. Hence moved the capital to Hanyang (Seoul) and built Gyeongbok Gung. Gyeongbok Gung was completed in 1394. But there were two fights over the throne among Taejo¡¯s sons. Taejo chose Jeongjong (Bangseok) as his successor. Jeongjong moved the capital to Gaeseong. When the youngest son, Taejong (Bang-won), became a king, he moved the capital back to Hanyang . This was in 1405. Taejong built Changdeok Gung. Official government events such as the protocol of diplomatic visits or the state rituals were conducted in Gyeongbok Gung while Taejong lived and performed his daily duties in Changdeok Gung.
